Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 9, at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial was in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake was in charge of the arrangements.
Ruth M. Saunders was born March 16, 1921 on the family farm in rural Manilla, the daughter of Austin and Catherine (Sowles) Saunders. She was baptized and confirmed at the First Methodist Church in Manilla.
Growing up, she attended school in Manilla where she graduated from Manilla High School in 1939. Following high school graduation she attended Iowa State Teachers College. After she received her Teaching Certificate she taught country school.
On Aug. 21, 1949 Ruth was united in marriage to Howard Sabel in Manilla. Together, they were blessed with three sons: Joe, Tom, and Matthew.
Ruth battled a hearing deficiency her entire life. She was the first ever Iowa recipient to receive a cochlear implant.
In her spare time, Ruth enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge. She was a strong faithful woman who was member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake where she worked with the afterschool church program. She loved travelling with her husband, Howard for 21 years to Texas. Ruth treasured spending time with her family and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Howard Sabel of Storm Lake; children: Joe (Denise) Sabel of Sisseton, S.D.; Tom (Joyce) Sabel of Newton; Matt (Laurie) Sabel of Big Lake, Minn.; grandchildren: Jeffrey Sabel; Jennifer Burkett; Brian Sabel; Jacob Sabel; Emily Sabel; and Jamie Sabel; four great grandchildren: Marcus, Macyn and Kobi Sabel; Jon David Burkett; sister, Virginia Jorgensen of Storm Lake; sisters-in-law, Zona Saunders of Manilla; Rita Saunders of Manning; extended family and many friends.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: James, George, Howard, Harold, Velie, and Eugene Saunders.
