Verna Atkins Loving
Verna Atkins Loving, age 86, of Albert City, and formerly of Pomeroy, died Dec. 20, 2011 at the Spencer Hospital in Spencer.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 23, 2011 at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Pomeroy. Burial was in the Evangelical Covenant Church Cemetery in Pomeroy. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City was in charge of the arrangements.
Verna Mabel Erickson, the daughter of Severius and Mabel (Johnson) Erickson, was born in Pomeroy on Feb. 25, 1925. She lived her youth in rural Pomeroy and was a graduate of Pomeroy High School. Verna continued her education at the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. Verna taught at the Bellville Township Country School and later at the Pomeroy Community School.
On Aug. 21, 1954, Verna was united in marriage to Marion Atkins at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Pomeroy. Together they were blessed with four children: Mavis, Janice, Joleen, and Barry. She was a devoted and loving wife and mother. Verna also enjoyed baking and cooking with her sister, Ruth, at Twin Lakes Bible Camp for many years. Following Marion's death in 1980, Verna returned to education and served in the library at the Pomeroy Community School for 13 years. In 1999, she came to make her home in Albert City. Verna was united in marriage to Elwood Loving on Nov. 29, 2003 at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Albert City.
Verna was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Pomeroy and a member of Covenant Women. She had also belonged to the S.A.K. Study Club and the Amvets Auxiliary in Pomeroy, and the "Just A Club" in Albert City. In recent years, she enjoyed serving as a volunteer at the hospital in Storm Lake. Verna has a sincere love for music which blossomed when she sang with a gospel quartet. She was also blessed with the gift of being able to play the piano by ear. Verna's love of music has continued to be passed along to her children and grandchildren.
Verna's life will always be cherished and celebrated by her family which include her husband, Elwood of Albert City; children: Mavis (Robert) Loving of Albert City; Jan (Jim) Quarnstrom of Ames; Joleen (Robert) Johnson of Albert City; and Barry (Katie) Atkins of Lombard, Ill.; grandchildren: Kelly (Andy) Wilson; Bailey and Jamie Quarnstrom; Kari, Karmen, and Laurie Loving; Zoe and Liam Atkins; and Luke Johnson; one great grandson, Rory Wilson; sister, Ruth Lantz of Pomeroy; three brothers: Merlin (Nadine) Erickson and Rubert (Doris) Erickson of Pomeroy; and Eldon (Zoanne) Erickson of Ames; nieces and nephews: Rachael Poling; Renee Olson; Eric Lantz; Marjean Seehusen; Scott Erickson; Lisa Aljets; Dean Erickson; Brad Erickson; and their families along with other extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marion, on Sept. 22, 1980; twin brother, Vernon Erickson; brother-in-law, Harold Lantz; and a nephew, Bruce Lantz.
