Luetta Reese

Luetta Reese, age 76, of Sioux Rapids, died Dec. 3, 2011 at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 8, at the Sioux Rapids Baptist Church in Sioux Rapids. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.

Luetta May Zeilger, the daughter of Lloyd and Lucille (Hersom) Zeilger, was born in Emmetsburg, on May 28, 1935. She grew up on a farm between Mallard and Emmetsburg. Luetta was involved in 4-H in Palo Alto County where she participated in clothing and food nutrition projects. She continued her interest in 4-H through her children and grandchildren. Luetta attended country school through the 8th grade in Palo Alto County and then attended high school in Emmetsburg where she was a 1953 graduate of the Emmetsburg High School. She continued her education at the Emmetsburg Junior College, Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, Iowa and completed her studies at Buena Vista College. Following college, Luetta taught 4th and 5th grade in Plover, Iowa and later 6th grade in Lohrville.

On May 26, 1957, Luetta was united in marriage to Melvin J. Reese at the Little Brown Church in Nashua and this union was blessed with four children: Arlene, Darwin, Mary, and Carol. After their marriage, they farmed near Rolfe and Rodman. From 1963 to 1978, Melvin and Luetta farmed in the Webb and Marathon vicinity. During the summer of 1978, they moved to their current farm near Sioux Rapids where Luetta was still residing. Throughout her lifetime, Luetta was involved with 4-H, she taught Sunday School for many years, and was a member of the Ladies Circle, Friendship Circle, card club and Bible studies.

Luetta's life will always be cherished and celebrated by her children: Darwin Reese of Sioux Rapids; Three daughters: Arlene (Avery) Simoens of St. Peter, Mo.; Mary (Paul) Struss of Courtland, Minn.; and Carol Elliott of Spencer; six grandchildren: Becky and Mitch Simoens of St. Peter, Mo.; Megan and Matthew Struss of Courtland, Minn.; John and Sam Elliott of Spencer; her brothers and sisters-in-law: Art (Shirley) Zeigler of Holtville, Calif.; Bill (Nancy) Zeigler of Emmetsburg; brother-in-law: Lyle (Linda) Reese; 2 sisters-in-law: Iva Williams and Vera Brown; aunts; nieces; nephews; cousin; other extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Melvin on Aug. 27,1997; and her son-in-law, Bob Elliott in February, 1997.
