Merle Bihrer, age 81, of Storm Lake, died Nov. 29, 2011 in Storm Lake.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 3, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Sac City, at 1 p.m. with full Military Rites by the Alta VFW Post #6172. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Merle Clarence Bihrer was born Oct. 1, 1930 in Odebolt, the son of Clarence and Ella Jean (Boom) Bihrer. He graduated from Odebolt High School in 1948.
On July 14, 1956, Merle was united in marriage to Shirley A. Brown in Sac City. Together, they were blessed with three children: Steve, Scott, and Sherrie.
After honorably serving in the Marine Corps, he worked at Nobles Popcorn for approximately 10 years until landing his dream job with the United States Postal Service in Storm Lake where he retired after 31 years.
Merle was a member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake and the Storm Lake Lions Club.
Merle loved all sports, especially football and baseball. He thoroughly enjoyed the Chicago Bears and the Kansas City Royals. Merle worked the chain crew at Storm Lake High School football games for nearly three decades. Merle was very active in his children's and grandchildren's lives and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Scott (Special friend, Sarah Kapustlia) Bihrer of Urbandale; Sherrie (Rich) Sassman of Storm Lake; daughter-in-law, Kim Bihrer of Orange City; three grandchildren: Dalton and Dylan Sassman; Keatyn Bihrer; brother, Floyd (Marge) Bihrer of Sac City; sister, Sandra (Kenny) Brown of Boise, Idaho; close family friend to Dylan, Samantha Hamer; extended family and friends.
Merle was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Bihrer; parents, Clarence and Ella Jean Bihrer; son, Steven Bihrer; and infant brother, Jackie Lou.
