STORM ALKE - The Buena Vista women's tennis team is eager to get out on the court and open its 2011 season when it hosts Iowa Conference foe, Simpson College, on Wednesday, August 31 out on the Buntrock Tennis Courts.
The Beavers return three varsity starters from last season's team and have added a handful of freshman who will all look to add balance and depth to the roster.
Senior Emily Gutschenritter, already a three-time letter winner, will be the anchor of the team for her final collegiate campaign. She comes in with more than 15 singles and doubles victories in her career. Sophomores Hailey Henrichs and Elizabeth Heffernan are also back in uniform for sixth-year head coach Kevin McCadams after posting four and three singles wins, respectively, during their first go around in 2010.
"I look for them to enforce our line-up and show more promise based on last year's season," says McCadams.
New to the team this season are freshman Mary Jane Ferguson (Surrey, British Columbia/Southridge), Tasha Nelson (Brandon, S.D./Brandon Valley), Kelli Kroepel (Shenandoah, Iowa/Shenandoah) and Amanda Kavan (Storm Lake, Iowa/Storm Lake).
"We have a much more balanced team and depth in our lineup going into the season," McCadams adds. "Our promising freshmen will be fun to watch."
Following the match on Wednesday, the Beavers will then return to action on September 10 for a pair of non-conference matches in Sioux City, Iowa, against both Morningside College and Missouri Western. They will then play four straight home games before closing the season with road matches in four of the final six overall. The Iowa Conference Team Tournament will take place on October 7-8 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, while the individual tournament is scheduled for the following weekend (October 14-15) also in Cedar Rapids.
