Leslie James Oatman, age 83, of Alta, passed away on Monday, June 13, 2011 at the Methodist Manor of Storm Lake.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 18, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Alta with the Rev Craig Lee officiating. Burial will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery of Alta with Military Rites by the Alta VFW Post #6172. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Saturday, June 18, from 1 -- 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Alta. The Nicklas D Jensen Funeral Home of Alta is in charge of the arrangements.
Leslie James Oatman was born Nov. 11, 1927 in Storm Lake, to William B. and Essel E. (Cannon) Oatman. He was raised in the Storm Lake area and graduated from Storm Lake High School. He served his country in the United States Army.
He was united in marriage on July 2, 1966 to Sandra Kay (Sullivan). Les farmed in the Alta and Storm Lake area. He was also employed as a policeman in Alta. He was an avid outdoorsman and he loved to hunt and fish.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and one sister.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Oatman of Alta; four sons, Wilbur Oatman of Alta, Tom Oatman of Alta, Mike Oatman of Baton Rouge, La., and Jim Oatman of South Dakota; two daughters Marlene (Randy) Mason of Ft. Dodge, and Betty Nieland of Dakota Dunes, S.D.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.
