Donald H. Manteufel, age 82, of Storm Lake, died April 29, 2011 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral services were held Thursday, May 5, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial was in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake was in charge of the arrangements.

Donald Henry Manteufel, the son of Heinrich F. and Ida E. (Wiebe) Manteufel, was born on the family farm on March 6, 1929. He was baptized on April 7, 1929 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Don attended Hayes School until his junior year of high school when he no longer attended school to take over the farming and help raise his four brothers in 1946 following the death of his father. He lived on the family's 107 year old Century Farm all 82 years of his life. Farming was Don's life. He had his first heart attack in 1995 and became the official "supervisor" of the field work. He retired in 2009 but still kept very busy and active in all of the farming operation. Don was still planning toward the 2011 crops and identifying jobs for the boys to do.

Don loved the Thresherman Bee in Albert City and looked forward to attending it every year. Nascar was a favorite hobby of Don's and he was also an avid reader. He traveled with his family to cheer on his nieces and nephews at all of their ball games. He always enjoyed visits with family members and the many trips to Denver and Kansas City with his family. Don also made a trip, by himself, to Washington State to visit his brother, Wayne, in 1983. He was always included in every birthday party and all family outings. Don will be remembered as being very patient with all the kids and loved playing cards with them and giving them rides on the flat rack around the farm. The cousins always enjoyed many family ball games together.

Those who will lovingly honor and cherish Don's memory include his brothers and their families: James (Marguerite) Manteufel of Storm Lake, and their children: Cindy (Mike) Wiseman of Alta; Dan (Kari) Manteufel of Thornton, Colo.; Randy Manteufel of Storm Lake; Sandy (Doug) Watts of Thornton, Colo.; Andy (Shana) Manteufel of Windom, Minn.; Connie (Chuck) Haselhoff of Ames; Dennis (Kris) Manteufel of Alta; brothers: Wayne Manteufel of Kent, Wash.; Harold (DeAnna) Manteufel of Gladstone, Mo., and their children: Jeff Manteufel, Linda Moore, and Laurie Thompson; sister-in-law, Sondra Manteufel of Hawkins, Texas and her children: Dorthea West of Longview, Texas; and their children: Jeoffrey (Alicia) and Kristin West of Ft. Worth, Texas; Nathan Manteufel of Hawkins, Texas; and Daniel (Channey) Manteufel of Tyler, Texas, and their children: Justin, Tanner, and Daneyl and their stepson, Kazan; 11 great nieces and nephews; 2 great-great nephews; other extended family and friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Henry (1946) and Ida (Wiebe) Manteufel (1983); brother, Allen Dale Manteufel (1978); and a great nephew, Aaron James Daniel Manteufel (1991).

Don will be greatly missed by his extended family. He has been a joy to the family and his company will be missed by all.
