Emil Pechous, age 97, of Yankton and formerly of Tabor, S.D. died Saturday, March 12, 2011 at the Tyndall Good Samaritan Center, Tyndall, S.D. Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Tabor, with Rev. Joe Puthenkulathil and Rev. Gerald Thury con-celebrating. Burial was in the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, Tabor, S.D.

Emil was born Sept. 4, 1913 on the family farm near Tabor, S.D. to James and Katerina (Hlavac) Pechous. He was the third of nine children born to this union. He attended Vlasak Country School and as a young man helped on the family farm.

On Oct. 4, 1937 he married Marcella Vitek and together farmed in the Tabor area until 1974 when they retired and moved to Yankton. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2007. He was past Treasurer of the Blacknick School District #26 and Beaver Creek Telephone Company. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards, pool, hunting, dancing, and coffee with friends.

Grateful for having shared his life are his 5 children: Donna Pishek of Storm Lake, Eileen Bares and Grace (Don) Rothschadl of Yankton, S.D., Joyce (John) Hauck and Joe (Sue) Pechous of Tabor, S.D.; 20 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter; a brother Sanford Pechous of Yankton, S.D. and a sister Evelyn Nohava of Tyndall, S.D.; two half brothers Laddie Pechous of Tabor, S.D. and Ray Pechous of Rapid City, S.D., and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons-in-law Laddie Bares and Eugene Pishek, two grandchildren Mary Lauren Pishek and Teresa Vonnahme, four brothers: Joe, Leo, Lawrence, and Donald, and two sisters: Rose Koletzky and Violet Machacek.
