Edwin George Wawers, age 93, of Fonda, died March 2, 2011 at Fonda Nursing and Rehab Center in Fonda.

Funeral services were Monday, March 7, 2011 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda. Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Fonda with Full Military rights. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake was in charge of the arrangements.

Edwin Wawers, son of Peter and Scholastica (Bernard) Wawers, was born Jan. 3, 1918 near Hankinson, N.D. He was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic Faith. Growing up, Edwin attended Country School in Richland County, N.D., near Hankinson. After the eighth grade, Edwin went to work with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Northern Minnesota.

Prior to joining the United States Army, Edwin was married and had a daughter, Claudia Jean.

Edwin served his country in the United States Army during World War II as a member of the 2nd Armored Division ("Hell on Wheels"). During his time in the army Eddie served on three continents in 10 countries, he was honorably discharged on June 27, 1945.

On June 2, 1949, Edwin was united in marriage to Evangeline Fritz at St. Kilian Catholic Church in St. Kilian, Minn. Together they were blessed with three daughters: Patrica Ann, Joan Mary and Catherine Marie. Eddie and Vangie made their home and raised their family in Garvin, Minn. until relocating to Fonda in 1996.

During his lifetime Eddie was employed operating heavy equipment, trucking for many years, and prior to retirement, was Superintendent of Buses and Transportation for Tracy Public School District in Tracy, Minn.

Eddie was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Tracy and Our Lady of Good Council in Fonda. He belonged to the American Legion Garvin Post and was a volunteer firefighter in Garvin for many years.

Eddie enjoyed spending time with his family and fishing with his daughters at nearby lakes. He was a handyman and excellent mechanic, seemingly able to fix anything. He very much enjoyed driving and seeing the countryside. He always insisted on taking the longer "scenic route" whenever possible when traveling.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Claudia (Bill) Boggess of Meridian, Id.; Patricia (Jack) Deuth of Montevideo, Minn.; Joan Kurtz of Storm Lake; Catherine (Larry) Greenfield of Fonda; grandchildren: Mark Bezinque; Sean, Melissa, and Paul Deuth; Jacob, Nicholas, and Veronica Kurtz; Nathan and Morgan Greenfield; 14 great grandchildren; brothers: Leander (Edith) Wawers; Benjamin (Marilyn) Wawers; Paul (Joan) Wawers all of Wahpeton, N.D.; sisters: Ione O'Hearn of Wahpeton, N.D.; Eva (Franklin) Miller of Duluth, Minn.; Marlys Miller and Dianne Clementich all of Fargo, N.D.; sisters-in law: Peggy Saxton; Mary Ann (Arlis) Osen; brother-in-law, Robert Fritz; extended family and friends.
