Beavers Host Annual Dennis Young Classic

STORM LAKE - The Buena Vista men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed on their own surface for the second straight week, this time hosting the annual Dennis Young Classic on Saturday.

Buena Vista had a pair of individuals place in the 55 meter hurdles, led by Andrea Boy's fifth place finish in 9.07. Bailey Schafbuck took seventh. Bree Kripps improved on her season-best 200 meter time by nearly a full second. Senior Bre Platt had herself a very solid day by shaving nine seconds off of her personal-best in the mile run before taking better than 20 seconds off of her 1,000 meter time.

The team also saw improvement in their relays, with the 4x200 team of Rachel Burnette, Schafbuch, Amber Woodford, and Molly Lorenz place third in a time of 1:52.41; nearly three tenths faster. The 4x400 relay closed the day with a fifth place effort, crossing the finish line in 4:14.5, marking their fastest time this season by six seconds.

In field events, freshman Amber Reidy placed fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 3.06 meters, while Bridgett Hasche threw 8.94 meters in the weight throw, bettering her previous best toss of 8.70 meters.

Junior Jared Bruce helped highlight the Beaver men with a second place finish in the mile run in his first outing in the event this season, finishing with a time of 4:35.88. The Beavers had a solid effort in the race with three others setting season-bests in the event. Brian Christensen bettered his time by 16 seconds, Corey Hannula by 10 seconds, and Andrew Soden by 11 seconds.

Andrew Smith broke the two minute mark in the 800 meter run and placed fourth, running in a time of 1:59.73. Matt Stafford improved by 16 seconds in the 1000 meter run.

The team also faired well in relays with the 4x200 meter relay team placing second in a time of 1:33.28, shaving one second of their season-best time set last week.

Stefan Peterson set a career-best in his indoor long jump by going 6.57 meters on his final jump, while placing sixth. Christian Cottingham (6.29m) placed 15th in the event, but bettered his personal-best mark by 0.18 meters. Matt Hudnall went 11.66 meters in the shot put, improving on his previous best of 11.22 meters from last week.

A total of 10 teams took part in the event with no team scores being kept.

Buena Vista returns to the track again next Saturday when the teams take part in the first annual Grinnell College Invite. Start time for that event is 10:00am.
