Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011 at the United Church of Christ in Fonda. Burial was in the Cedar Cemetery in Fonda. The Mahaney Funeral Home in Fonda was in charge of the arrangements.
Helen Lillian Nagel was born at the family farm in Williams Township on Aug. 13, 1915 to William and Amber (Pierce) Nagel. Growing up, Helen attended country school through the eighth grade and Fonda High School, where she graduated in 1933. While in high school Helen was very active in school plays and on the speech team.
On May 26, 1935 Helen was united in marriage to Calvin "Kelly" Boettcher at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fonda. Together the couple was blessed with one child, Gary.
Helen spent four dedicated years teaching at the country school before starting her job at the First National Bank where she was employed for 16 years. Helen and Kelly later owned and operated The Sunrise Tavern in Fonda for 40 years. In Helen's free time she especially enjoyed playing golf, doing crafts, bookkeeping, and playing bridge. She was awarded the Life Master in the game of bridge. Helen also stayed active as a volunteer at the Fonda Golf Course as the club treasurer for 40 years, at the United Church of Christ and as a supporter for the Fonda Town and Country Boosters. Helen loved to have family and friends visit and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
The family of Helen gratefully thanks the Fonda Nursing and Rehab Staff for all of the kind and loving care they gave Helen over her last years.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter-in-law, Caroline Boettcher of Fonda; grandchildren: Jeanice (Dan) Regnier of Spencer; LuAnn (John) Kelly of Fonda; Brian (Kate) Boettcher of Waukee; great-grandchildren: Zachary (Kara) Neppl of Seargent Bluff; Lindsey Neppl of Ankeny; Erik Regnier of Ankeny; Marc Regnier of Cedar Falls; Sarah Kelly of West Des Moines; Patrick Kelly of Ames; Joshua Boettcher of West Des Moines; Nathan Boettcher of Waukee; Brittany Boettcher of Iowa City; great-great-granddaughter, Kinzie Neppl of Seargent Bluff; special nephew, Larry Nagel of Roanoke, Ind.; special niece, Linda Steffes of Grand Island, Neb.; special cousin, Bill Messenger of Omaha, Neb.; numerous nieces and nephews; extended relatives; and many friends.
Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Kelly Boettcher; son, Gary Boettcher; Parents, Will and Amber Nagel; siblings: MaDonna Nagel; Vern Nagel; Alvin Nagel; O'Neal Nagel; and Dorothy Provost.
