Judy R. Steffen, age 67, of Storm Lake, and formerly of rural Albert City, died Dec. 14, 2010 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Mass was Friday, Dec. 17, 2010 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina. Burial will be at a later date. The Mahaney Funeral Home in Fonda is in charge of the arrangements.

Judy (Erickson) Steffen was born Oct. 6, 1943 in Sioux Rapids, the daughter of Ruth (Essick) and Carl Erickson. She attended grammar school in Peterson, and graduated from high school in Albert City.

On Sept. 28, 1963, Judy was united in marriage to Raymond Steffen at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina. Together they farmed and raised livestock 2 miles north of Varina until April of 2003 when they moved to Storm Lake.

Judy attended Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge and eventually graduated from Buena Vista University in 1993. Judy was very active in her community where she served on the Alter Society, American Legion Auxiliary, W.D. Steiner Unit 588 in Varina for over 40 years and Women of the Moose of Spencer. She also served in both the Multi-county boards of Head Start, Upper Des Moines Opportunity and AEA. Judy enjoyed reading, cooking and making thousands of rosaries that she shared with the world.

Judy is survived by her husband of 47 years, Raymond; daughters: Michele (Robbie) Abbenhaus of Terrill; Regene of Storm Lake; Jana (Tracy) Lane of Hospers; Stephanie of Storm Lake; sons: Michael of Lake View; Jonathon (Jill) of Schaller; grandchildren: Amber (Jeff) Cagle; Jarad Abbenhaus; RyAnne and Izabelle Steffen and great grandson, Justus Flannigan; father and stepmother, Carl (Swede) and Ardie Erickson of Peterson; brothers, Carl (Edith); Peter (Nancy); Erik (Barb) and Alex (Linda). Stepsiblings: Jean (Tom) Steed; Christine (Bob) Johnson; Ray (Kathy) Essick; and Russ (Cindy) Essick; Sue (Terry) Parson; sisters-in-law, Inez Berns and Marie Erickson; many nieces and nephews; other extended family and friends.

Judy was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Erickson and her in-laws, Rose and Mike Steffen; brother, David Erickson; brother-in-law, Jim Berns.
