Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 15, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial was in the Storm Lake Cemetery with full Military Rites by the AMVETS Post #66. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake was in charge of the arrangements.
Donald Cleveland Carl was born Aug. 24, 1919 in Ottumwa, the son of Charles Leo and Gertrude C. (Rodwell) Carl.
Growing up, he graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1938 and continued his education at Iowa State University where he graduated in 1948 with a degree in Electrical Engineering.
On Aug. 19, 1941, Don was united in marriage to Helen M. Lewis in Russell. Helen later passed away. On Nov. 6, 1999, Don was united in marriage to Frances "Franny" Demers at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake.
Don worked at a Sub-Station in 1948 and as a Superintendent for the Iowa Public Service Company. Don also was employed at Buena Vista College for 6 years as the Foreign Studies Coordinator.
Don was a World War II Veteran of the United States Navy where he worked in the Naval Research Laboratory. He was a 50 year member of the Jewel Lodge AF&AM. Also, he was a longtime Scout Leader of Troop #104 and was presented the Silver Beaver Award for outstanding long term service to scouting by the Prairie Gold Council. Don was a member of SERPACI Club and served 42 years of perfect attendance at the Hy-Noon Kiwanis Club in Storm Lake. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Don was a longtime member of SCORE.
Don loved to sail on Storm Lake. He enjoyed golfing, dancing and spending many winters in Arizona. Don loved his family and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Frances "Franny" Carl of Storm Lake; son, Charles L. (Judy) Carl of Hernando, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Sue Voss of Washington, D.C.; grandson, Donald (Jeanie) Carl of Oklahoma; two great grandchildren, Charles and William Carl; stepchildren: Randy (Judy) Demers of Columbia, S.C.; Vicki (Ted) Rowsey of Wichita, Kan.; 7 step grandchildren; 13 step great grandchildren; sister, Thelma (Hubert) Owings of Ottumwa; sister-in-laws: Wanda (Richard) Risback of Chariton; Louise (Frank) Thacker of Colorado; Margaret Beeman of Florida; Lois Cerny of Council Bluffs; extended family and friends.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen; son, Dr. James R. Cal (1-14-1995); infant daughter, Susan (1952); and sister, Isabel Stokes.
