Gerine L. Huckelberry, age 95, of Des Moines, and formerly of Linn Grove, died on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010 at the Mercy Hospice House in Johnston. Funeral services were Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Linn Grove. Burial was in the Barnes Township Cemetery in Linn Grove. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids was in charge of the arrangements.

Gerine Elaine Colby, the daughter of Carl and Florence (Rokkan) Colby, was born at her parent's farm house in Clay County, on Aug. 8, 1915. She received her education at the Sioux Rapids Community Schools, graduating with the Class of 1933. Gerine continued her education and graduated from the American Institute of Business in Des Moines.

Gerine was united in marriage to Guy Huckelberry of Carlisle, on Oct. 3, 1937, at the First Lutheran Church of Sioux Rapids, and this couple was blessed with two sons: David and John. The majority of Gerine and Guy's married lifetime was spent in the Linn Grove and Sioux Rapids areas. They farmed south of Linn Grove for 19 years and then moved to Sioux Rapids where they made their home for 41 years. The past 3 years, Gerine lived at assisted living facilities in Spencer and Des Moines.

She was a member of The Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church (WELC) Questers, the Women's Study Group in Sioux Rapids, and the Sioux Rapids Historical Society. In her younger years, Gerine enjoyed her job as a nurse's aid and in her later years she continued to help people by delivering Meals On Wheels. Gerine was a very thoughtful friend to so many and was known for her willingness to help anyone in need, especially the elderly. She possessed and shared a wealth of knowledge of both local and family history. Reminiscing, sharing family ancestry, and preserving family artifacts and records were some of Gerine's greatest delights. She will be remembered for her wit, her good conversation, her love of cats, and her raspberry jam. Gerine's family held a very special place in her heart and she will be greatly missed as a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and loving friend.

Those who will always cherish her memory include her children: David (Mary) Huckelberry of Ely, Minn.; John (Jan) Huckelberry of Tempe, Ariz.; grandchildren: Mia (Tom) Arter of Prairie City; Celia (Jeff) Richards of Waukee; Kyle (Angie) Huckelberry of Prosper, Tex.; John Jr. (Sarah) Huckelberry of Tempe, Ariz.; great grandchildren: Shea and Brienne Arter; Hayden and Laurel Richards; Justin and Rylie Huckelberry; Colby Huckelberry; her brother, Allen Colby of Minneapolis, Minn.; other extended family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Guy who died on Jan. 23, 1983; and her three sisters.
