The second go-round of shared athletics between Alta and Aurelia got underway on the football field Friday as the Class 1A Warriors opened with non-district foe Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto of Class 2A.
With a line that boasts four players at least 6-foot, 235+ pounds, including two at 6'3, 290, the heftier Rams had the momentum in the early going, taking advantage of shortened fields to punch in a pair of second quarter scores by Ryan Dougherty and Josh Trucke.
"We had some decent drives in the early going and moved the ball pretty well," said A-A head coach Kevin Hammer. "Defensively, we had been giving them great field position and we did better with that in the second half."
The Warriors came out firing in the second half, battling the bigger MVAO line back on a 17-play drive, but an inadvertent whistle negated a Warrior touchdown. However, A-A recovered a fumble soon thereafter, and Ryan Friedrich was able to convert on a one yard scoring run with three and a half to go in the third.
