Donald Ray Holmes Sr., age 89, of Storm Lake, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010 at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community.

Memorial services will be 2:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010 at the Bethel Baptist Church in Newell. Burial will be prior to the service, in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake, with full military rites by Alta VFW Post #6172. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Don was born March 12, 1921 in Storm Lake, the son of John and Kizzie Holmes. Growing up, Don attended Alta High School where he graduated in 1938.

On Dec. 4, 1940, Don was united in marriage to Marjorie Hansen at Immanuel Lutheran in Sioux City. Together they farmed near Alta until Don enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in October, 1942. He was a 1st Lieutenant and flew B-29's from the base in Saipan to targets in Japan until he was honorably discharged in January, 1946.

Following the service, Don and Marj farmed until they retired in 1983. They continued to live on their farm near Alta until 2004 when they moved to Lake Pointe Villa in Storm Lake.

Don was a member of the Alta VFW Post #6172. After retirement, they enjoyed traveling to see family members and other parts of the world.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 69 years, Marj of Storm Lake; his children: Daphne (Dwayne) Hofschulte of North Pole, Alaska; Don Jr. (Janet) Holmes of Plankinton, S.D.; Dwain (Lois) Holmes of Makuma, Ecuador; Dari Sunderland of Rochester, Minn.; nine grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; one great - great grandson; extended family and friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, John and Kizzie Holmes; son, Dennis Roger Holmes; sister, Lucile Wolterman; brother, Richard "Dick" A. Holmes; great granddaughter, Danielle Renae Holmes.
