A Memorial service was held on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010 at the Evangelical Free Church in Albert City. Burial will be at a later date in Waterloo. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
Andrew Alvin Wilhelm Blomberg, the son of Carl J. and Olga (Johnson) Blomberg, was born in Pine City, Minn., on Feb. 19, 1925. At the age of 5, Andy moved with his family to Albert City where he lived his youth and received his education. He was a graduate of the Albert City High School and continued his education at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. Andy faithfully served his country during World War II in the United States Marine Corps. He entered the service on May 25, 1943 and was honorably discharged on Oct. 24, 1945. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre.
Andy was united in marriage to Barbara Petersen on July 9, 1955, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, and this couple was blessed with 3 children: Eric, Sara, and Amy. During this lifetime, he was employed with the Deere Company in Waterloo, served as the city clerk and city auditor for the city of Waterloo, and he served as city manager of Iowa Falls. His last employment was as the business manager for the Hawkeye Valley Area Agency on Aging in Waterloo. Barbara died on May 21, 1982.
On Dec. 26, 1983, Andy married Bonnie Kulp in Albert City. In 1986, he retired and moved back to Albert City. From 1987 to 1988, Andy and Bonnie ministered through the New Tribes Mission in Papua New Guinea.
Andy was a member of the Albert City Evangelical Free Church and the Albert City American Legion. Special pastimes that brought enjoyment to Andy included golfing, doing carpentry work, working crossword puzzles, fishing, watching sports, and doing puzzles. Andy also traveled to Poland where he served with the International Messengers. He also received special distinction by serving as a participant in the Older Iowans Legislature.
Those who will always honor and cherish his memory include his wife, Bonnie of Albert City; his children: Eric and Diane Blomberg of Omaha, Neb.; Sara and Dave Braga of Winterset; Amy and Ric Bishop of Shelbina, Mo.; Bonnie's children: Dwight and Lori Kulp of Albert City; Jon and Melissa Kulp of Pocahontas; Kathy and Steve Claassen of Aurora, Colo.; Sue and Kirk Owens of Sanford, Fla.; and Charlene and Richard Van Allen of Sacramento, Calif.; 21 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; one brother, Richard Blomberg of Albert City; and two sisters, Ingeborg Blomberg and Vivian Wilbur both of Albert City; other extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara; 6 brothers: Arthur, Emil, Calvin, Kenneth, George, and Herbert and one sister, Evangeline Soderquist.
