She attended school in Omaha and was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic faith at St. Francis Church in Omaha. She became a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, where she served on the Ladies Guild.
On March 8, 1944, Irene was united in marriage to Robert L. McLaughlin at St. Francis Church in Omaha. They were blessed with four children: Linda, Kathy, Rose and Pat.
After raising their children, Irene joined Robert L. in their business venture of Commercial Services, Inc., a trucking company in Storm Lake. Irene remained active, working with her daughter, Pat and son-in-law, Keith, until her retirement in 1992.
Irene was an active member of the AMVETS Auxiliary where she served as president. With her husband Robert L., she traveled and visited family and friends across the country.
