Herbert F. Hammer, age 103, of Pocahontas, passed away on Friday, March 26, 2010 at the Pomeroy Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Monday, March 29, 2010 at Hope United Methodist Church in Pocahontas, with Pastor Chad Lierman officiating.
Burial was in Summit HIll Cemetery in Pocahontas.
Herbert Fredrick Hammer was born on Oct. 28, 1906, near Newell. He was the son of Louis and Mary (Westmoreland) Hammer. He attended Dover Twp. country school and graduated from Varina High School in 1925. On Feb. 25, 1931, Herb married Thelma Whitaker at the Methodist Parsonage in Rembrandt. The couple settled near Pocahontas where they farmed for 50 years. In 1971, they retired and moved into Pocahontas. Herb then worked for Levene Construction until 1981.
Herb was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church where he received a Life Membership pin from the UMW. He was also a Lodge and Scottish Rite of Sioux City and was active with the Princess City Players. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and canning. He baked bread and pies and played the piano. Herb was the recipient of a lifetime pass to all Pocahontas Area School Activities in recognition of his strong support of the school. He was affectionately known to his grandchildren as "Grandpa Poky."
Survivors include his children, Marilyn (Gary) Taylor of Conway, Ark.; Linda Meyer of Spencer; David (Marilyn) Hammer of Pocahontas and Rhonda (Ray) Hampton of Story City; 20 grandchildren; many great-grand and great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Laura Belle McConnell of riverside, Calif. and MaryLou (norman) Johnson of Pocahontas and brother, Louis (Jeri) Hammer of Pocahontas.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Thelma; son, Sherill "Mike"; granddaughter, Diane; sisters, Dorothy Olson, LuVerne Danielson and Bessie Zemke and brothers, Walter, Mervin and Harry Hammer.
