The goal was to raise the matching funds to what was already in the Handicapped Accessible Project account and memorials to $135,000. On Nov. 15, pledges came in for $91,361 and by Jan. 15 the pledges were at $131,401 with nine pledges that indicated that their commitments would be disclosed when the project was started.
With that success, the congregation approved to finance with the proposal offered by Central Bank of Storm Lake. Gundman Hicks Construction of Cherokee will handle the construction.
The new handicapped accessible entrance would include an elevator that would allow access to both the basement and first floor of the church (through the narthex). Two handicapped accessible bathrooms are planned, one on each floor. This plan will not compromise the integrity of the original design of the church. All new features are completely included in the new front addition. The construction will utlize the original stone and will take care of the problem of deteriorating concrete steps currently in place at the entrance to the church.
