Paul graduated May 20, 1937 from Storm Lake High School. After graduating, Paul went to Montana to try out the cowboy lifestyle. After returning to Storm Lake, he tried his hand at working in the movie theater and then managing. Paul enjoyed reel to reel movies and music; he worked at radio stations including Fort Dodge.
Paul joined the Storm Lake Fire Department, the job he loved for the next 23 years. He especially remembered the fire of "Old Main" on the campus of Buena Vista College. Also, the big fire that destroyed Vilas Company, where he and fellow firemen got blown across the railroad track.
Later he worked as a custodian at North School and the Junior High in Storm Lake. Paul was interested in maintaining quality in his job and took numerous continuing education courses.
Traveling 48 states and taking photos and developing photos were very enjoyable for Paul.
