Mae Ellen Bersee passed away Dec. 28, 2009 at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Festus, Mo.
A funeral service to celebrate her life was held Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church in Schaller, where she had been a member all her life. Adam Cox officiated the service, and burial followed in the Schaller Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller was in charge of the arrangements.
She was born Feb. 11, 1921 in Schaller, to Hans and Hannah (Jepsen) Andresen. She graduated from Schaller High School as salutatorian of the Class of 1938. She married Dr. C.L. Bersee of Omaha, Neb. in 1939. Mae is survived by her daughters: Linda (Gary) Currie of Coralville, and Mary Ellen (Kevin) Carroll of DeSoto, Mo.; grandsons: Cameron (Lisa) Webb of Olatha, Kan., Nathan J. Currie of San Antonio, Texas and Theodore J. Currie of Indialantic, Fla.
A Schaller resident nearly all her life, she worked over 30 years as a teller and cashier at the State Bank of Schaller. She was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher for over 30 years, as a deacon, an elder, and president of the Ladies' Society. She belonged to, and enjoyed, C-Con Club, Red Hat Society and Arts and Crafts. Mae enjoyed her family, reading and shopping. She was always ready to go to a sale, auction, or have coffee.
Her later years were hampered by her loss of sight due to macular degeneration. Despite this challenge she kept her spirits high, even at the darkest of times, and didn't let self-pity overcome her. She enjoyed the company of people and was a loyal friend to many.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hans and Hannah Andresen, her brothers Henry and Clyde Andresen, and her sisters Glennis Broadston and Verna Thoreson.
