Bids were looked at from eight contractors. The lowest bid, $527,200, turned in by Haselhoff Construction of Cherokee, was accepted. Bids ranged all the way up to $652,000.
Alta Fire Chief Gary "Mo" Molgaard was pleased with the number of bidders and was extremely glad the accepted bid was lower than the $605,000 estimated cost for the project.
The new facility, designed by FEH Architects of Sioux City, will be 60'x150' and will include a training room, six-truck bay, apparatus room and even a fitness center that would be available for use by community members (fees will be worked out at a later time.)
Funding for the project has come from many individual as well as city and utilities donations. Most recently, a $100,000 grant was received from USDA.
Chief Molgaard was present as the council awarded the bid.
"Thanks a million," he told the mayor and council members.
The construction will begin this fall.
