Buena Vista University (BVU) has selected Elizabeth S. Merten as the new vice president for business services.

Merten, who graduated from BVU in 1985 with an accounting major, has worked at the University for 33 years, including 32 years in the Office of Business Services. She has been serving as the interim vice president since Sept. 1, 2007, filling the vacancy left by the 2007 retirement of Randy Fehr.

"There is no better audition for a job than actually doing it, and Liz has performed exceedingly well as our interim vice-president," says BVU President Fred Moore. "She has steered us through a very challenging economic climate and helped to maintain the strong financial health of the University. We have also successfully completed a number of capital projects on her watch, and our HR programs and services have been expanded."

"It is an honor to come full circle with my career and experiences at the University," says Merten. "The past 33 years have provided a tremendous amount of professional and personal growth that truly reflects our mission at BVU. I am excited about the opportunities ahead of us and I am looking forward to continuing to develop and enrich the partnerships and relationships here at the University, and across the region."

Merten started at Buena Vista in 1977 as a bookkeeper for Ballou Library and was promoted to the business office in 1978. In 1982, she was named assistant to the vice-president for business services and in 1990 was promoted to business manager. In 1996, she was appointed director of business services, the position she held before being named interim vice president.

She received her master's degree in human resources management from Briar Cliff University in 2006. She also holds a certification in college business management from the University of Kentucky, an employment law certification from Drake University and a senior professional in human resources certification from the Society for Human Resource Management. She is a member of several professional organizations.

A native of Kannapolis, North Carolina, Merten has lived in Storm Lake for more than 40 years. Her husband, Rich, a 1990 BVU graduate, is the owner of Merten Trucking. Their daughter, Lisa, who is a 1988 BVU graduate, is the director of human resources for Behlen Manufacturing Co. in Columbus, Neb.
