A teenager who crashed a car into the Buena Vista University football stadium Wednesday was apparently "huffing" - inhaling fumes from an aerosol container - while driving.
Police were called to the stadium on Grand Avenue shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday. A vehicle had struck the west side of the stadium and then slid into a university maintenance truck.
Deon Parkhurst, 16, of Storm Lake, was driving southbound when he apparently became lightheaded and lost control. Damage to the stadium was estimated at $8,000. Parkhurst's vehicle had $7,500 damage, and the BVU truck had $800 damage.
During the investigation, police located and seized drug paraphernalia from the Parkhurst vehicle. Storm Lake Police charged the teenager with Failure to Maintain Control and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Additional charged are pending toxicology reports. Parkhurst was released to a parent pending a court appearance.
Storm Lake firefighters assisted at the scene.
