On the morning of Sunday, June 21, 2009, at approximately 2:08 a.m., the Storm Lake Police Department was dispatched to the 700 block of Vestal Street in reference to a 17 year old male of Iowa Falls, who had cut his own arm and was injured at that location.
Upon arrival of police they located the subject and took him into custody. Police further located a 17 year old female of Storm Lake at that location. The male subject later identified as Colby Tripp, age 17 of Iowa Falls, was transported to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center by paramedics.
The 17 year old female was cited for Possession of Alcohol and released to a parent pending a court date.
Police met with Tripp at the Medical Center and following treatment at that location charged him with Public Intoxication and Possession of Alcohol (both simple misdemeanors). He was cited and released to his mother pending a court date.
Tripp was treated and released from the medical center to his mother. At approximately 5:30 a.m., police were advised that Tripp had fled from his mother's vehicle on foot and was missing.
Police began to look for Tripp and, at approximately 6:21 a.m., police were advised that Tripp was located by his mother in the 600 block of Grand Avenue and he again was causing problems in her vehicle approximately one block from that area.
Police arrived at the mother's vehicle and, upon opening the door of the mother's vehicle, Tripp allegedly struck an officer in the eye with his fist cutting and injuring the officer.
The officer subdued Tripp and took him into custody. Tripp was again transported to the Medical Center and was evaluated and released. Police additionally charged Tripp with Assault on a Police Officer Causing Injury (aggravated misdemeanor) and Interference With Official Acts Resulting in Injury (aggravated misdemeanor). He was processed and transported to the Youth Detention Facility in Cherokee, IA pending a court date.
The police officer was treated at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center and released for duty.
