The Buena Vista outdoor track and field teams will send a total of six events to this weekend's NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in Marietta, Ohio, hosted by Marietta College.
On the men's side, senior Eric Bertelsen will compete in four events, including the long jump, in which he enters with the nation's longest jump of 7.50 meters - set during the Victor Rice Lopez Invite in Houston, Texas over spring break. Bertelsen looks to sweep the national titles in the event after jumping 7.54 meters to win the title during this year's indoor season. A year ago, he qualified for the outdoor championships and placed sixth.
In addition to the long jump, he will also run in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, as well as a leg on the 4x100 meter relay. He's tied for the second-fastest time in the 100 (10.51) and the fifth-fastest in the 200 (21.41). The 4x100 team was the last to get in, qualifying with their time of 41.54 which was set at the IIAC Championships.
Along with Bertelsen, fellow senior Shawn Olorundami will compete in the 110 meter hurdles, while also running a leg on the 4x100. He comes in with the third-fastest mark of 14.33 seconds. Olorundami was runner-up at this year's national meet in the event and took fourth at last year's outdoor championships.
Joining Bertelsen and Olorundami in the 4x100 will be senior Justin Bauer and sophomore Kenneth Nichols.
Senior Natalie Olorundami will be the lone individual on the women's side representing BVU, as she earned qualification with the 15th-best time of 14.60 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles. That mark was set during the Sioux City Relays. Sophomore Morgan Darrow nearly qualified in the shot put, but her provisional mark of 13.21 meters missed out by only 0.01 meters.
Buena Vista has a chance to earn more than two All-American honors in a single outdoor season for the first time since the 1998 season when there was a total of seven accolades earned among three individuals.
A total of 688 participants will compete in the championships, which get underway on Thursday, May 21 and run through Saturday, May 23.
