Americorps slashed

Surviving one more year in Storm Lake

A Storm Lake Americorps program will stay afloat for one more year, but only at half mast.

Jennifer Movall, program director for Project UNITE, learned Friday that the program will only be allocated enough slots to accommodate nine members rather than the 31 requested. Last year, they had 15 volunteers.

Just days ago, Movall did not know if the program would even exist this year.

"I'm glad we're having a program," she said. "We have enough to get us through until next year and hopefully we will receive funding then."

Project UNITE helped around 200 area children with after-school programs last year. With their requested $63,000 budget cut in half, the volunteer program will only be able to help 100 this year.
