Shortly after 11 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13, Cherokee Police responded to a report of a stabbing at 421 S. 9th Street in Cherokee. During the initial investigation, it was determined that David Cline, 53, of Cherokee had received several stab wounds to his head and upper torso area of his body.
Cline was transported to Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee, where he was treated and admitted.
Shortly after 1 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, Stephen Craig Leonard, 53, 406 Ash Street, Sutherland, was arrested near a residence in the 600 block of West Locust Street in Cherokee and has been charged with attempted murder. Leonard is being held in the Cherokee County Jail and bond has been set at $250,000.
The incident remains under investigation and more charges on Leonard are pending.
The Cherokee Police Department was assisted by the Cherokee Police Reserves, Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, Iowa State Patrol, Aurelia Police Department and the Department of Criminal Investigation.
