October is national pork month, an opportunity to promote the product's consumption and beneficial impact on local economics.
"Pork is the world's most widely consumed meat and Iowa's pork producers take pride in leading the nation in hog production," said Buena Vista Farm Bureau President Dean Baughman. In Buena Vista County, there were 298,220 hogs on 270 farms according to the 1997 Census of Agriculture.
There are 15.4 million hogs on Iowa farms-more than 25 percent of the nation's hogs. Thirty-five of the top 100 counties in the United States with the largest hog inventory are in Iowa with Buena Vista ranking 26th in the 1997 Census.
Pork production is vital to Iowa's economy. In 1999, Iowa's pork industry generated more than $2.2 billion in cash receipts, according to the United States Department of Agriculture's hogs and pigs report.
