The vocal music department at Buena Vista University will be sponsoring two music camps for high school students later this summer in Storm Lake.
The BVU Showchoir Camp will run from Friday, July 25, to Sunday, July 27. The Finale Performance featuring two Showchoir Shows and selected soloists will be held at 4:30 p.m. in Anderson Auditorium on July 27. The free concert is open to the public.
Guest directors for the camp include: Joel Johnston, Millard West High School in Omaha, Neb.; Jackie Bryan, choral director at Okoboji High School; Lisa Evans, choreographer from Des Moines, Mark Mangold, choreographer from Minneapolis, Minn.; and Tom Gerking, choral director from Westwood High School in Sloan.
Guest accompanists include Peter Carlson, band director at Sibley-Ocheydan High School, and Robert Barry, choral director at East Middle School in Sioux City. Students can elect to receive theory classes and private voice lessons.
Paula Keeler, choral director at BVU and Gayle Sykes, music instructor at St. Mary's School in Storm Lake, will organize and assist with camp instruction.
BVU music students act as counselors and additional instructors for the three-day camp, while BVU instrumental students will provide the band backup for the Showchoir Finale Performance.
Beginning choral directors or those starting new showchoirs can attend a day-long seminar directed by Paula Keeler. Instructors read new music, view successful choir tapes and exchange information on beginning a showchoir ensemble at their school.
The BVU All-State Camp will begin on Friday, Aug. 1, and will run through Sunday, Aug. 3. High school students from throughout Iowa can attend the camp to begin study for the All-State Vocal Auditions in October.
Guest directors for the camp include: Everett Johnson, former Executive-secretary for the IHSMA as lead director; Jeff Tollefson, choral director at Storm Lake High School, Bill Hott, choral director at Wall Lake View Auburn High School; Mary Citta, choral director at West Waterloo High School, and Paula Keeler, choral director at BVU.
Guest accompanists and assistant directors for the camp are Brent Peterson, choral director at Waukee Middle School, and Jean Busker, choral director at West High School in Sioux City. They will be assisted by Deanna Larson, accompanist at BVU, and Judy Fells, accompanist at Storm Lake High School. Several BVU student accompanists will also be assisting with small sectional rehearsals at this year's All-State Camp.
The Finale Rehearsal for the Camp will be at 3 p.m. in Schaller Memorial Chapel on Sunday, Aug. 3. The public is invited to listen to the 240-voice choir. There is no admission charged for this event. Students or instructors interested in additional information can call the vocal music office at 749- 2193.
