An engineering firm will begin design work on a $455,000 runway and taxiway project at the Storm Lake Municipal Airport.
The Storm Lake City Council approved a supplement to an October 2002 contract with the engineering firm Snyder & Associates of Ankeny.
The original contract with Snyder & Associates was for an analysis of runway 17/35 and taxiways 1 and 2.
"During that analysis, it was determined that both runway 17/35 and taxiways 1 and 2 had serious drainage issues which were causing uneven cracking along the surfaces," said Justin Yarosevich, administrative services director for the city.
Since then, both the engineering firm and city staff have worked with the Federal Aviation Administration to secure funding for the complete project.
Yarosevich said there is a strong possibility that the city will receive federal funding for the project totaling 90 percent of the project's total cost, or $408,466. The city's share would be 10 percent, or $45,386.
