Newell-Fonda, Pomeroy-Palmer battle for playoff lives

Friday, October 13, 2000

"They are the best football team we have played so far this year," Newell-Fonda coach Brian Wilken said. "They have terrific offensive linemen and they have a big back in Alex Poppen who runs hard and a quick back in Kevin Krausman who also runs hard. They have great skill kids with Loots, Thompson and Ford. They're very, very dangerous with all the weapons they have on offense."

"Defensively, they are big up front and they have great linebackers behind those linemen and they're also a very good defensive team," Wilken added. "They've held some of the higher scoring teams in the district down."

Wilken talked about the keys.

"We've got to stop the run," he said. "That becomes our first priority every week. We're going to try and stop that first and we've got to tackle well. We have to play fundamentally sound pass defense and our linemen have to get a pass rush on their quarterback."

"We've got to be able to run the football," Wilken added. "Our passing game has to be much better than it's been. Our special teams have to continue to be solid and not make mistakes."
