Local students perform with Hawkeye marching band

Friday, October 13, 2000

Rachel Otto of Storm Lake and Mikel Brandhorst of Holstein are members of the 2000-2001 Hawkeye Marching Band at the University of Iowa. Otto is, a freshman at the UI and plays the piccolo and Brandhorst is a freshman trumpet player with the band.

The band performs under director Kevin Kastens. Under his direction, the band puts more than 200 students on the field for its performances. They perform at pre-game and half time of all Hawkeye home football games, and travel to at least one away game each fall.

The band has already made their one out-of-town trip for this year, traveling to Kansas City for the Eddie Robinson Classic against Kansas State University in Arrowhead Stadium Aug. 26.

They will also perform at the UI School of Music's annual Band Extravaganza at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 14 and 15, in Hancher Auditorium on the UI campus. A celebration of bands and band music, the Band Extravaganza features the top groups in the UI band department: the Symphony Band, the Johnson County Landmark jazz band and the Hawkeye Marching Band.

Kastens is associate professor of music and assistant director of bands at the UI. He directs the Hawkeye Marching Band and the Concert Band, teaches band arranging and marching band techniques, and is the director of the All-State Music Camp.

Tickets for reserved seats for the Band Extravaganza are available for $4 from the Hancher Auditorium Box Office. From the local calling area, dial (319) 335-1160. Long distance is toll-free, 1-800-HANCHER.
