Working in the comfort of home

Friday, October 13, 2000

Polly Fabrizio sits at her computer in jeans and a casual shirt with her four-month-old Belgium Malibu, Leggi lying beneath her feet everyday.

Fabrizio began consulting on her own ten years ago and has enjoyed the comfort of her home business north of Storm Lake ever since.

Fabrizio is a Management Marketing Consultant, who develops proposals for those in the architectural and building industry - from her own home.

Fabrizio, who believes the traditional form of making proposals has gone out the window, began her Back Room business, when she realized the technology to publish her proposals no longer needs to tie her to a desk and office.

"I think designing is the fun part," Fabrizio said. "After writing the proposals, the publishing really is the fun part."

Fabrizio works out of an office located in the upstairs of her parents' farm house north of Storm Lake.

"My parents are in their 90s and this is something that helps allow them to be in their own home," Fabrizio said. "They just need the presence of someone in the house. I don't think they could do it otherwise."

When starting a home business, Fabrizio suggests knowing something about what you'd like to market and what the market will be.

"I was ready for it," said Fabrizio, who worked for a consulting agency in the Twin Cities before moving back to Storm Lake. "I was traveling a lot and was just sick of airplanes."

Fabrizio said it was comforting to have a business base to start from.
