HOLSTEIN - Gavin Hanson returned a punt 63 yards for a touchdown to set the tone for Galva-Holstein's 19-6 win over Alta in a Class 1A district game.
"The big difference in the game was our special teams," Alta coach Kevin Hammer said. "Our kickoff and punt coverage was not good all night. Our open field tackling was extremely poor. Offensively and defensively we did things we wanted to do. We weren't quite effective, but we played well enough to win the football game. We shorted up the field on them and they took advantage."
Alta tied the game at 6-6 in the second quarter on Tyler Droegmiller's 1-yard quarterback sneak. The Pirates went ahead 12-6 on Jacob Brosamle's 23-yard run before Scott Breyfogle pushed the lead to 19-6 with a 32-yard scamper.
Breyfogle finished with 131 yards rushing for the Pirates, now 5-1. Jon Nielsen rushed for 97 yards for Alta, now 2-4.
Nate Wiese made 19 tackles and Droegmiller 13 for Alta. Brosamle and Eli Stines each had 11 tackles for the Pirates.
