Funeral services for Clara Whitaker, 90, of Rembrandt, were held Friday, Oct. 6, at the United Methodist Church in Rembrandt. Rev. Harold Koughn officiated the 2 p.m. service.
Casketbearers were Jim Puffer, Doug Sassman, Dean Whitaker, Scott Whitaker, Don Gibbons and Wencil Small. Burial was in Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. Sliefert Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Whitaker passed away at her home on Tuesday, Oct. 3.
Clara Sylvia, the daughter of George and Minnie (Sassman) Martz, was born June 11, 1910, in rural Sioux Rapids. She received her education in the Sioux Rapids school system. Following her schooling, she worked as a nurse at the Swallum Hospital in Storm Lake.
On Feb. 23, 1933, she was united in marriage to Curtis Clifton Whitaker. To this union one daughter, Shirley, and one son, Donald, were born.
The couple ran a restaurant in Cherokee for a short period of time before moving to Rembrandt in 1940, where Mrs. Whitaker was a homemaker, held Friendly Home Parties, toy demonstrations and was a cake decorator.
She was an active member of the United Methodist Church where she held many offices, including president of U.M.W.
Mrs. Whitaker was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter; three sisters and four brothers.
She is survived by one son, Donald, and his wife, Ardis Whitaker of Rembrandt; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one son-in-law, Phil Rath of Sioux Rapids; other relatives and friends.
