The Buena Vista County Historical Society has been inviting others to explore the county's heritage for 40 years. This Sunday it invites the community to celebrate its 40th Anniversary at 2:00 p.m.
The historical society, a non-profit organization, was founded in 1960 to preserve and display items significant to the county's history.
Max Ireland of Storm Lake has been interested in the historical society since 1967, when he was asked to give a program to the group.
"I was working at a pharmacy at the time and they asked me to demonstrate how to make pills," Ireland said. "I showed them how they were rolled in the hand. I also showed them several other skills that pharmacists were using at that time."
Ireland also gave a program dealing with recipes for cosmetics on another ocassion.
"I showed them how to use corn meal to get rid of acne as well as some cold cream made out of lard," Ireland said. "I found these programs so interesting that I joined up."
