The Storm Lake Hy-Vee presented its annual Shop Smart for Education awards. This year, a total of $13,589.33 was distributed to 24 participating schools.
This is the sixth year the Storm Lake Hy-Vee has offered the Shop Smart for Education program. Since it began in 1998, a total of $79, 639.71 has been awarded to area schools and preschools.
Storm Lake Hy-Vee Store Manager Denny Hartogh said the Shop Smart for Education program is good for the area and something the store plans on continuing.
"It's our duty to help support these schools," he said. "Everyone in this store is proud of this program."
The Shop Smart for Education program works by having schools collect the pink store receipts and then turning them back in. Awards are based on the total of store receipts by school. They are typically collected during the school year, from August to May.
