Spillers is the executive director of Positively Iowa, a private, non-profit organization that works to promote and inspire public thought about social, economic and environmental issues affecting rural Iowa. He was in Storm Lake this week speaking at the monthly meeting of the Business and Professional Women's Organization.
Positively Iowa was founded in 1995 by the Iowa Newspaper Association. Spillers explained that Positively Iowa is forming an agenda for rural areas - the purpose is to bring grassroots action to the local level and encourage local input on local, state and national issues.
"We cannot rely on people (in government) to read our minds on what decisions to make on a local level," Spillers said. "We all have issues - Positively Iowa gets them involved in the process of affecting those issues."
Spillers became executive director of Positively Iowa three years ago. He talks to a variety of organizations and groups across the state, of all of whom have a "stake in the quality of life," he said.
Spillers said Positively Iowa tries to involve different groups of people at the local level.
