SL High School, Middle School recipients of peer grants

Thursday, October 5, 2000

The Storm Lake Middle School and High School are recipients of a grant from the National Youth Safety Crops to help develop a peer mentoring group as well as other crime and drug prevention programs.

The National Youth Safety Corps is an initiative developed by the National Crime Prevention Council with the U.S. Department of Education, Storm Lake High School Principal Mike Hanna explained.

"The mission of the Safety Corps is to recruit, train and mobilize a diverse student population to improve the learning environment of American schools," Hanna said. "The goals are to get kids involved, designing and running youth crime, violence and drug prevention projects."

The peer mediation efforts of the Storm Lake High School would fit right into that area, Hanna said.
