Storm Lake elementary school principal Juli Kwikkel has returned from a meeting with Governor Tom Vilsack last week in Des Moines. She was one of 10 Iowans selected to meet with Vilsack to discuss proposals for education-related legislation.
Kwikkel said she is impressed with Gov. Vilsack's concern about education in the state of Iowa.
"I don't think I've ever seen a Governor so in tune with education as Gov. Vilsack," Kwikkel said. "It will be interesting to see what happens in the legislature this year."
Last week the ten Iowans met to discuss issues, including from early childhood development, linking student performance with teacher compensation and how the state can better fund such initiatives.
Gov. Vilsack and Lt. Gov. Sally Pederson identified four education goals from their Leadership Agenda for the group to work through. According to the Governor's office, the goals are:
* Provide comprehensive and coordinated support of children from birth through age five and their families to ensure a safe and healthy environment and early childhood learning.
* Provide a system of pre-kindergarten, elementary and secondary education that will improve learning, achievement and performance of all students.
* Foster a seamless system of higher educaiton that promotes access, accountability, quality, diversity and cooperation.
