Rembrandt child killed in rural road accident

Thursday, September 28, 2000

An 11-year-old Rembrandt boy is dead after being hit by a vehicle late Monday afternoon. The victim, William Benjamin Decker, is the son of Bernard and Kris Decker.

The accident occurred on C-25 about three-quarters of a mile west of M-44. According to Buena Vista County Sheriff Chuck Eddy, the boy ran out of a farm driveway, turned west along the shoulder of the road and then ran across the roadway into the path of a vehicle.

The vehicle that hit Decker was driven by Steven Heckert, 22, of Peterson, who was traveling westbound at the time. The vehicle came to a rest in the north ditch, but the driver was not injured.

Decker was transported by ambulance to the Buena Vista County Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Assisting at the accident scene were the Rembrandt Fire Department and the Buena Vista County Ambulance.

The investigation was being completed yesterday afternoon, Eddy said. No charges had been filed.

Also, a critical incident debriefing will be held for all law enforcement and emergency rescue workers who were at the scene, Eddy said.

"They're all difficult for everyone involved when there's a fatality and a young child involved," Eddy said. "It's hard for everybody."
