City Hall Day to help officials with city issues

Wednesday, September 27, 2000

A City Hall Day will be held in Storm Lake October 11, designed to give city officials an opportunity to meet with legislators and candidates to discuss issues of priority to the city.

The Storm Lake meeting will be 4:30-6 p.m. at Storm Lake City Hall, and will involve cities and legislators from Senate district 5. Thirty-eight other City Hall Day sessions are planned around the state.

Among the likely priority issues for cities in the next legislative session are, according to the Iowa League of Cities:

*Preserve city authority to utilize tax increment financing.

*More equitable distribution of property tax burdens among classes of property.

*Dividing law enforcement cost more equitably among citizens and making cost based on services rendered.

*Altering the machinery and equipment tax reimbursement formula for communities that contain a substantial amount of industrial equipment in the tax base, and providing a financial safety net for communities that demonstrate need for additional revenue due to the machinery and equipment tax loss.

*An interim study of the Road Use Tax Fund and a review of the current allocation formula.

*Additional funding to enhance and build on the Brownfield Redevelopment program.
