Car theft by Spencer man leads to fatality

Monday, September 25, 2000

The theft of a car from Valley View in Spirit Lake resulted in the death of a Tucson, Ariz. man early Sunday morning.

Tyrone Lindsay, 22, of Spencer was driving the car on Highway 9 when he apparently lost control, striking a grain bin nearly three miles east of the junction with Highway 59 in Osceola County. The 911 call was received at 5:45 a.m.

Lindsay's passenger, Rodney Rozell-Contando of Tucson, died instantly in the fiery crash. Lindsay was taken to Osceola Community Hospital and later transferred to Spencer Municipal Hospital.

According to Spirit Lake Police Chief Dan Thomsen, Lindsay was later arrested. "We had a warrant out for his arrest and Spencer police officers arrested him after he was released from the hospital."

He was taken to the Dickinson County Jail and later released on bond after being charged with operating a vehicle without the owner's consent.

The 1997 Pontiac was owned by Amanda Stebritz of Armstrong.
