Alta, Aurelia capture their own tournaments

ALTA - Greta Lichtenberg went 40-for-43 in hitting with 24 kills, while Tigist Cook was a perfect 38-for-38 in serving with seven aces as Alta won three matches in the Alta Tournament played on Saturday.

Alta defeated Storm Lake St. Mary's 15-5, 15-5; Sioux Central 15-11, 14-16, 15-8; and Graettinger 15-13, 15-4.

Laurie Grieme was 28-for-32 in hitting with 18 kills for the Cyclones. Ashlea Payne was 30-for-35 with 18 kills. Nicole Kjolhede went 20-for-23 with 11 kills.

Megan Brechwald was a perfect 24-for-24 in serving, while Kjolhede was 25-for-27 with five aces. Shandra Walker was 15-for-17.

Danielle Allen charted 30 set assists, while Payne added 16. Kjolhede had seven digs and Payne added six for Alta, now 6-1 overall.

"We played solid," Alta coach Jeannie Henningsen said. "Our offense was on track and our hitters came through with the kills. We had a few close games and it was good to see the girls play under pressure. We are on a roll right now and we have to keep focusing on one game at a time."

Aurelia Tournament

Aurelia defeated Storm Lake St. Mary's 15-4, 15-8 to win the championship match Saturday.

Aurelia split with St. Mary's 12-15, 15-13 in the first round, beat Sioux Central 15-5, 15-2, and beat Sac City 16-14, 15-8.

St. Mary's beat Sac City 15-9, 15-6 and Sioux Central 15-13, 15-4 in previous rounds.

Kim Parker went 32-for-32 with three aces in serving for Aurelia, now 4-3-1 overall. Jada Rapp was 24-for-24 with five aces and Lindsay Ireland 37-for-41 with 10 aces.

Emily Jipp went 57-for-66 in hitting with 17 kills, while Parker was 36-for-40 with eight kills. Liz Scharton was 25-for-28 with 13 kills.

Ireland made good on 73 of 74 set attempts with 19 assists, while Jessica Monical was 60 of 63 with 15 assists. Scharton charted 21 blocks, while Kati Nelson added eight. Mary Keith had nine digs and Alicia Buddenhagen six.

Scharton, Jipp, Melissa Snyder and Peggy Ploeger of St. Mary's, Leslie McCall and Julie Goettsch of Sioux Central, and Lisa Engel and Brittany Miner of Sac City were named to the all-tournament team.
