Barrs selected parade grand marshals

Sunday, September 17, 2000

The Storm Lake High School Student Council has selected Roger "Smokey" and Donna Barr as this year's Grand Marshals for the annual Homecoming Parade, which will be held Friday, Sept. 22. The Barrs, 36-year residents of the city beautiful, are the proprietors of Sportsman's of Storm Lake. They have been some of the most active supporters for both the school and the community.

It would be rare indeed to attend a school or city function without seeing Smokey or Donna. Smokey has spent many years coaching little league baseball, soccer and tournament basketball, while Donna was active serving on the BAC boards at West Elementary, SLMS and SLHS. She also served for a number of terms on the board of the SLHS Music Boosters. Both Smokey and Donna have donated more than their share of time as chaperones for a variety of school functions. Dances were particular favorites of the Barrs, where Smokey mixed many a bowl of "green" punch! Currently, the Barrs serve on the SLHS Athletic Booster Board.

The Barrs have two children, Julie (Class of 1996) and Ryan (Class of 2000). Julie, who attended the University of Iowa, now teaches fifth grade in Kansas City, Kan. Ryan, captain and MVP of last season's Lakes Conference championship baseball team, is now a freshman at the University of Iowa.
