The City of Storm Lake has just secured a grant to widen and expand the LakeTrail recreation path from Hudson Street to Grand Avenue. Justin Yarosevich, Administrative Services Director for the city, announced the grant at yesterday's city council meeting.
Yarosevich estimated that the grant will be worth approximately $110,000 through an 80/20 matched contribution, with 20 percent coming from the City of Storm Lake. The city applied for the grant in February.
Tentative plans are to expand the existing Lake Trail from Hudson Street to Sunset Park to eight feet in width, while adding a section through Circle Park to connect with the existing sidewalk on Grand Avenue. Engineering plans still need to be finalized for the project, Yarosevich noted.
The grant starts in in October, but construction probably would not begin until next fall after summer activities are completed, Yarosevich said.
The grant is an enhancement grant administered through the Iowa Dept. of Transportation. The city has received similar grants for road construction, including both the East and West Third Street projects.
In other council business, the City Council decided to hold a special election to fill the council seat vacated by Bob Ferguson at its last meeting.
