Storm Lake was treated to a first Saturday night as Gov. Tom Vilsack and First Lady Christie Vilsack presented the play "Love Letters" as a fundraiser for Friends of the Storm Lake Public Library.
The Governor, positioned stage right, and the First Lady, stage left, were seated behind desks adorned with photographs, books and other items representative of their characters.
The Governor portrayed Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and the First Lady was Melissa Gardner. The play, by A.R. Gurney, follows the correspondence of these two characters from childhood until the death of Melissa. Their letters start with a birthday party thank you and evolve over the years as their relationship develops.
The Vilsacks impressed the audience Saturday night, evoking both laughter and sighs of sympathy.
