Velez will resign from city council; will seat be filled?

Tuesday, June 17, 2003

Storm Lake City Council member Hector Velez said that he will be leaving town and will have to resign his position on the council.

His announcement came at yesterday's council meeting.

Velez has taken a position with Tyson Fresh Meats in North Carolina. He said he will be leaving toward the end of the summer. He has been the community liaison at Tyson Fresh Meats in Storm Lake.

The first minority on Storm Lake's city council, Velez said his term as a council member has been fun.

"I've enjoyed serving," he said.

Storm Lake Mayor Jon Kruse said Velez has been "a great addition to our crew."

"We wish you all the luck," he told Velez.

Since the term of Velez expires in November, the city attorney is exploring options for the city as to whether a special election will be needed or if the position can remain vacant until November. A decision will be forthcoming, Kruse said. The council could also choose to appoint a person to complete Velez' term. The public has the option of petitioning to call for a special election.
